We all have an accent- no matter how hard we try to hide it. In fact, an accent different from our own can be detected within 30 milliseconds… even when a voice recording is played backwards!
Since accents are such a natural aspect of speech, why is it so difficult to understand them when listening to a foreign language? It is even more difficult to naturally acquire, or even mimic, an accent we try to speak a foreign language? Accents have always been there and evolve over time in the same way languages do, but what do you think is the reason why they exist in the first place?
