Daffodils, stuffing our faces with chocolate Easter eggs, bunny rabbits, palm branches … some of the things we love about Easter. But one of the things we wouldn’t love is to be Smingus-Dyngus-ED. Smingus-Dyngus is a Polish tradition consisting of throwing buckets of water on people. Legend says girls who get soaked will marry within the year, so be careful it doesn’t happen to you!!
In Eastern European countries over Easter the tradition on Easter Monday if for men to spank women with handmade whips made of willow tree branches and decorated with ribbons. According to legend, the willow is the first tree to bloom in the spring, so the branches are supposed to transfer the tree’s vitality and fertility to the women. This playful spanking is all in good fun and luckily it isn’t meant to cause pain.
It’s a more civilised approach you’re looking for, you’ll prefer the Easter celebrations held at the White House. For 130 years, it has hosted the Easter Egg Roll on its South Lawn. The main activity involves rolling a colored hard-boiled egg with a large serving spoon. much tamer. The only problem being that you’re really not likely to get an invite any time soon.
